I started my PhD in 2005 and am scheduled to complete in 2010. The original plan was to investigate telematics, as that was my research area at the time, but expanded this to include virtual worlds in 2006 and this now forms the majority of the work I'm doing. A core part of the research has been synthesising the models from telematics, virtual worlds, work in MOOs and also the telepresence ideas of those working with teleoperators and telerobotics. I am applying these to the formation of presence in learning and teaching and its role in effective learning experiences.
