My PhD research is a longitudinal study of undergraduates at the University of Warwick. I'm looking at the role that structural and cultural factors play in the development of personal identity amongst my participants, as well as how these processes ties into the emergence of a distinct mode of reflexivity i.e. manner of considering their selves in relation to their contexts and vice versa. I hope that the ongoing nature of the study, consisting of interviews with 16 participants each term for their entire time at university, will facilitate a more precise understanding of a complex and dynamic relationship (structure/culture/subjectivity) than would be possible in a synchronic research project.
