Thesis Title: The Westerns of Fritz Lang

About

I have recently completed an MA thesis on the three Westerns Fritz Lang made in America: The Return of Frank James (1940), Western Union (1941) and Rancho Notorious (1952). Vastly enriched by archival research in Paris, Laramie and Los Angeles, my thesis tried to situate these films within Lang's canon, despite seeming largely at odds with his central concern with the experience of modernity in urban environments. Shot on location, in Technicolor, these films offer a fascinating way of reassessing Lang's relationship with the cinema and culture of America.

My previous MPhil degree analysed the relationship between the Vorticist aesthetic of Wyndham Lewis and the philosophy of science, exploring the cultural parallels between the position of the Artist and Scientist at the turn of the century in Britain, as well as the relationship between theories of abstraction and concurrent paradigm shift in space-time theory. Supervisor - Duncan Robinson.

In 2007 I was made the Henry Fellow at Yale University and spent one academic year there working under the auspices of Professor Timothy Barringer.
